4-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour via Merzouga
From imperial Fes across the Middle Atlas to the Sahara, ending in Marrakech — Morocco's greatest hits in 4 days.
Fes is the closest great city to the Sahara: from its ancient medina the road runs south through cedar forest and palm valleys, and by nightfall the dunes of Erg Chebbi fill the horizon.
Fes gives desert travellers a head start. At roughly 470 km, the Fes to Merzouga road is the shortest link between a major city and the big dunes, and it is beautiful the whole way: the Middle Atlas cedar forests where Barbary monkeys watch the traffic, the ski town of Ifrane, lunch in Midelt, then the long green ribbon of the Ziz Valley running south to Erfoud and the dunes. Our Fes departures include the 3-day Fes to Merzouga desert tour and the traveller favourite that keeps going — the Fes to Marrakech desert tour, which turns the journey home into the second half of the adventure.
Fes is also a destination in itself. Add a guided medina day before you leave — the tanneries, the madrasas and 9,000 alleys deserve unhurried hours — or begin one of the northern journeys that link Fes with Chefchaouen, Volubilis and Tangier. Every Fes tour includes pickup from your riad or hotel and an English-speaking local driver-guide.

Desert tours, multi-day journeys and day trips starting in Fes — every one with pickup from your accommodation and an English-speaking local driver-guide.

Because Fes is Morocco at its most authentic, and the desert is closest from here. Travellers who start in Fes get the oldest medina in the world as their opening chapter, the shortest scenic road to Erg Chebbi, and the option of the country’s finest one-way journey: dunes behind you, Marrakech ahead, no road travelled twice.

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are about 470 km from Fes — roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving with stops. On the 3-day tour the journey south is direct with scenic stops; on longer tours a Middle Atlas or valley night breaks it further.
If your flights allow, continue to Marrakech. The Fes to Marrakech desert tour visits the same dunes, then returns via Ait Benhaddou and the High Atlas — two completely different roads, and you finish in the city with the most international departures.
