3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour
Cross the High Atlas, sleep in a luxury Sahara camp and ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset.
The Sahara is the number one reason most travelers come to Morocco, and the experience lives up to the hype. But with dozens of desert tour options, choosing the right one matters enormously. This guide covers everything: Merzouga vs Zagora, how many days you need, what a luxury camp is really like, and our recommended tours.
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has Morocco's tallest dunes, up to 150 meters, with that classic Saharan landscape of sweeping orange sand. It is further from Marrakech (2 days minimum) but absolutely worth it. Zagora is closer to Marrakech (reachable in 2 days) but the dunes are smaller and rockier.
Our honest take: if you have 3 or more days, go to Merzouga. The dunes are dramatically more impressive. If you only have 2 days from Marrakech, our 3-day Merzouga desert tour is the best compromise.
Forget roughing it. Our luxury camps feature real beds with quality linens, private bathrooms with hot showers, electricity, gourmet dinner, Berber drumming around the fire, and the most spectacular stargazing of your life. This is glamping at its finest.
For thrill-seekers we offer 4x4 off-road piste tours on Dakar rally tracks, Enduro KTM bike tours through the dunes, and buggy adventures with no license needed.
Two decisions shape every Sahara tour: which camp and how you reach it. Standard camps are sociable and comfortable, with real beds and shared washing facilities on some routes; luxury camps give you a private bathroom inside the tent, hot showers and more space — worth it for honeymooners and anyone who values sleep before a travel day. You reach both the same way: a camel trek of about an hour across the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, timed so you crest the big dune as the light turns gold.
If camels are not for you, say so when booking and we will drive you to the camp by 4x4 instead — you still get the sunset from the dune ridge on foot. And whatever camp you choose, set an alarm for an hour before dawn. The sunrise trek back, with the dunes changing colour under your feet and breakfast waiting at camp, is the moment most travellers name as the best of their whole Morocco trip.
People picture the camp; they forget the evening that comes with it. A typical night runs like this: arrive by camel as the light fails, mint tea on the dune ridge, dinner in the camp restaurant tent — soup, tagine, bread, fruit — then drums and songs around the fire, with guides who have played those rhythms since childhood. The sky does the rest. With no light pollution, the Milky Way is not a metaphor in Erg Chebbi; on moonless nights it casts a faint shadow.
Sleep is better than most expect: real mattresses, heavy blankets, and silence so complete that first-time visitors often wake at dawn simply because the light changes. Wake-up is the sunrise walk up the nearest dune, then breakfast and the ride or drive back to Merzouga village for showers and the onward road. It is a rhythm refined over decades of caravans, and it is why we say the camp is not accommodation on the way to something else — it is the destination.
